The river trip of “Heritage on the Water: Community Engagement through Logboat Building and Archaeological Discovery – HOW” project took place on the Pärnu River on 18 June 2026. The journey was organised by the Estonian Logboat Society.

The programme began on the evening of 17 June at the Samliku guesthouse, which served as the participants’ base camp. The evening programme included a joint dinner, screenings of films about logboats and informal social activities for the Estonian and Latvian participants.

On 18 June, the participants travelled to Türi, where the river journey began. The approximately 23-kilometre route followed the Pärnu River from Türi to Samliku, with a lunch stop near Laupa Manor. Participants travelled in traditional logboats and had the opportunity to practise paddling and manoeuvring the boats while experiencing the river landscape from the perspective of traditional waterborne travel.

The journey brought together 28 participants, including 23 from Estonia and five from Latvia. Five participants represented the project partner organisations (2 from Latvia and 3 from Estonia). The joint activity supported direct interaction between Estonian and Latvian members of the broader logboat heritage community and encouraged the exchange of knowledge about logboat use, river navigation, local history and cultural landscapes.

The Estonian journey was the first of the two planned joint heritage journeys. The corresponding Latvian river journey is scheduled for September 2026.
